Why video cases?

As faculty take on new teaching challenges, we believe they learn best from one another. It is increasingly difficult, however, for faculty to come together physically. To overcome this challenge and to assist institutions with limited resources, we are developing an online series of case study modules. Case studies are well-suited to supporting the task of reimagining teaching and learning environments. Our video cases allow new blended faculty to hear the voices of those who have experienced the challenges and rewards of constructing and facilitating blended courses. In addition to video clips of faculty discussing their experiences in course design and teaching, each case study includes planning exercises and course simulations.

On Planning with Madalaine Pugliese

In this case study, Madalaine Pugliese discusses how she planned for the transition of her course Differentiated Instruction using Technology across the Curriculum from a fully face-to-face course to a blended one. She shares concrete planning and organizational strategies that can be easily replicated. Also included in this case study are exercises on planning and on using YouTube in the online classroom that can be adapted and used during workshops or Institutes on blended course development.

Tips for Blending Your Course with Karen Teeley

In this case study, Karen Teeley shares her experiences transitioning her courses Caring for Individuals, Families and Communities and Caring at the end of Life: Interdisciplinary Perspectives from fully face-to-face courses to blended ones. She summarizes her experiences in a presentation called Top Ten Tips: Designing a Blended Learning Course. Also included in this case study are exercises that can be adapted and used during workshops or Institutes on blended learning. Included are exercises on backwards design and on using ten specific questions to guide blended course development.

Blended Group Work with Sarah Volkman

In this case study, Sarah Volkman discusses how she set up online student groups (5-7 people per group) to support learning in her courses. These smaller online environments help students build understanding of the core content, including individual and group work on clinical case scenarios. The case study course demo showcases her use of groups in Normal and Abnormal Human Physiology, a large lecture course.
